Advent Series: Words for the Beginning
During the four weeks of Advent, and continuing though Epiphany, we will share “Words for the Beginning,” helpful reminders and words of encouragement to begin again. Advent is a time to prepare for what is to come and to ready ourselves for the road ahead. Yes, there will be Christmas joy, but the work of Christmas – the work of justice, kindness, and peace, is still ahead of us.
After worship on Sundays we will gather in Epworth Hall for a unique One-Church-Sunday-School experience. The lessons and activities will align with our worship series, and will encourage people of different cultures to connect in meaningful ways. We will learn songs and phrases in Swahili, Kirundi, Karen, and build friendship across our diverse congregation.
Blue Christmas, December 21, 4:00 p.m.
Blue Christmas is a service to create space for lamentation in the midst of a joyful season. Sometimes the “Christmas cheer” can become overwhelming, especially if we don’t allow room for mourning, grief, anxiety, and fatigue. This service is at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 21 and will end at the start of the earliest sunset of the year.
Christmas Eve, December 24, 4:00 p.m.
We have one Christmas Eve service at 4:00 p.m. We sing traditional Christmas hymns, invite everyone to the Communion meal, and set lights aglow as we sing “Silent Night.” There may even be a reminder of our last Gospel According to Peanuts series. This is a beautiful service that hits all the notes of tradition, memories, and family.
Christmas Party, December 25, 3:00 p.m.
This is a brand new event at Two Rivers United Methodist Church. The church is usually closed on Christmas Day (unless it’s a Sunday). This year, Barutwanayo Jacques and the other African families have asked to have a Christmas party in Epworth Hall (downstairs). While most of the food and music will come from East African cultures of Burundi, Tanzania, etc., all are invited. There will also be friends and family from Burma and other Karen-speaking families as well. We don’t know exactly what to expect, but if you are looking for a fun and lively celebration on Christmas, this will be a memorable afternoon. You can bring food to share if you like, but all are welcome with or without.
